Sustainable Luxury: Marisol Zero Two

With a focus on our environmental impact, Burdge Architects is committed to seeking innovative ways to construct exquisite homes while prioritizing sustainability. We are proud to showcase our latest accomplishment, Marisol Zero 2, a remarkable project that exemplifies the future of eco-conscious luxury living. Nestled in the heart of Malibu's pristine landscapes, this home is part of the visionary Marisol Zero Series, a groundbreaking endeavor developed by Crown Pointe Estates. This home is one of four zero-carbon homes meticulously designed to align with the standards set by the Paris Agreement and Kigali Accords. This commitment to sustainability goes beyond conventional limits, shaping the future of luxury living.

Our Approach to Sustainability

Marisol Zero 2 stands as a testament to our commitment to eco-conscious luxury. On our path to Net Zero, we focused on two critical aspects: embodied carbon and operational carbon. Embodied carbon, stemming from the home's construction materials, their manufacturing process, and transportation to the site, was reduced by thoroughly researching and strategically sourcing carbon-conscious materials. All wood framing for the home was sourced from California, which actually has more strict regulations for sustainable forestry practices than the well-known national designation of “FSC Certified” wood (Forest Stewardship Council., Where steel was required, we sourced locally and prioritized products with the highest level of recycled content available, thereby further minimizing environmental impact. By utilizing low-carbon concrete, we reduced concrete emissions by 42%, which is equivalent to removing 40 gasoline-fueled cars from the road. In fact, this low-carbon home is the first in Southern California to voluntarily meet the requirements of the Marin County Low Carbon Concrete Code.

Operational carbon, which is the carbon it takes to run the house, was thoughtfully minimized at Marisol Zero 2 by completely eliminating all gas and combustion sources, instead opting for fully electric appliances and systems. By eschewing gas and combustion sources for water and pool heating, opting for induction cooktops and electric appliances, and even choosing water vapor fireplaces that mimic the appearance of flames without carbon emissions.

Features and Amenities

Zero Two's eco-conscious design seamlessly merges with its luxurious amenities. The Hawaian-inspired home boasts a 170-foot-long wooden lanai at the entrance, bridging over a beautifully landscaped pond that leads to a secluded guest house, which is connected to the main house through a glass bridge. Adding to the tropical allure is an infinity-edge pool and hot tub overlooking the magnificent Pacific Ocean. The pool pavilion features a locally sourced lava rock-clad water vapor fireplace, all kept warm by electric Infratech heaters in the ceiling. An impressive bar, outdoor BBQ area, and a tennis court with multiple sporting options provide unparalleled opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Inside, a Dolby Atmos theater with a 150-inch projection screen, a home gym with a yoga deck, and a wine closet for up to 150 bottles further elevate the living experience.

Zero Two features several other amenities designed for a holistic lifestyle. A filtered ventilation system, an organic fruit orchard, vegetable and herb gardens, and an apiary for pollination and honey production were incorporated. Tesla batteries and solar panels were utilized to power the residence.

A More Sustainable Future

Zero Two stands as a remarkable testament to our commitment to forging a sustainable future for luxury living. The Marisol Zero Series continues to inspire, setting new standards and exemplifying the extraordinary possibilities when environmental consciousness meets architectural innovation. Zero Two is more than a home—it's a visionary statement that luxury and sustainability are inseparable partners on the path to a greener tomorrow.
