Who We Are

We are an architectural, planning, and consulting firm based in Malibu, California. We specialize in the design of residential and commercial projects around the world. Our passion is to work hand in hand with our clients’, pushing them to dream bigger, and make those dreams become reality.

Douglas W. Burdge AIA and his team of designers are recognized for their diverse architectural styles, including Spanish Mediterranean, Traditional, “Rustic-Modern” and cutting-edge Contemporary, from Malibu to Sun Valley to Los Cabos, Mexico. Burdge has become the preeminent architect of Malibu, having designed and built over 300 projects in the region, for notable clients including entertainment moguls, and Fortune 500 CEOs. Sophisticated homebuyers commission BAA, knowing that working with BAA will result in a distinctive coastal home that reflects their individual personality.

BAA’s experience is unsurpassed in the City of Malibu, possessing the ability to efficiently execute distinguished residential and commercial projects through his long-term relationships with city officials, local real estate brokers and developers, and geological consultants. Real estate publications frequently attach the name Burdge to the prominent estates on the market, knowing that the value on a Burdge home will be greatly affected.

In addition to BAA designs frequently being featured in national publications some projects, such as the highly acclaimed Trancas Country Market, have also been used as location sets on popular television shows.

Beyond Malibu, BAA has produced a variety of commercial, mixed-use, multi-family and single-family estate projects in Paso Robles, California; Sun Valley, Idaho; and Big Sky, Montana. The firm is committed to maximizing the best use of sustainable materials and methods and creating eco-friendly designs for all of its projects.

Douglas Burdge, AIA:

Douglas W. Burdge, AIA, is undoubtedly the signature architect of Malibu, as his firm has designed and built over 200 high-end estates in the Malibu region alone.

As comfortable designing a Mediterranean-style estate as a Modern home, Burdge has created breathtaking contemporary ocean-front retreats with floor-toceiling glass doors that open to reveal endless vistas of the sea and sky. Burdge is also well-known for designing in a Rustern style, a term he copyrighted, which means “a home, furniture or design style of rustic-modern influence.”

In addition to residential projects, Burdge and his team have designed award winning boutique hotels, restaurants, shopping centers and private clubs. Projects have been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, The Wall Street Journal, Veranda, Robb Report, Luxe and Traditional Home. In addition to receiving several "Home of the Year" PCBC Golden Nugget awards, his residential work in Sun Valley has consistently landed his firm on Mountain Living Magazine’s annual Top Mountain Architects & Interior Designers list.

Douglas graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Southern California. He is currently a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art. The proud father of twin sons, Doug currently resides in Malibu with his wife Laura, where they also own a popular home decor store - Malibu Beach House, and are partners in a unique Bloody Mary mix called Malibu Mary.

That brought Mario to Los Angeles, where he studied architecture at Southern California Institute of Architecture. He got an internship at Burdge in 2004.

He also spent a year abroad studying in Vico Morcote, Switzerland and traveling through Europe visiting many prominent architectural sites. Which has all influenced his passion for architecture. Jennifer Hoppel, AIA, Associate

Growing up in the midwest Jennifer's love for architecture began as a child when her mother would rake leaves into floor plans so she could 'play house’ in the yard. Little did either one of them know that this would lead to her life-long career and passion - designing homes.

Jennifer went from backyard leaf houses to studying architecture and sustainable design at the University of Minnesota. While at the U of M she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture with a Minor in Spanish, a Masters of Architecture, and was a member of the Dance Team. Always drawn to the relationship of a building and it's inhabitant, her focus on residential design became more vivid during this process, and ever since she has sought out premier residential architecture firms to pursue her passion.

Jennifer began her career interning at SALA Architects, a Twin-Cities based architecture firm specializing in residential design. Three years later she made the jump to Southern California, and spent the following 7 1/2 years at KAA Design Group, helping to design some of the most beautiful homes lining the beaches and hills of Los Angeles.

After her first daughter was born she accepted a job in Malibu, acting as a general contractor for one of the houses she had helped to design with her previous firm. The following 3-year stint in construction helped to solidify her love of residential design, and added a breadth of job-site expertise that she now finds invaluable in her architectural career.

Jennifer began with Burdge and Associates in January of 2015, and became an Associate at the firm in 2018. Her tenure at BAA has afforded her the opportunity to help develop countless Burdge“works of art”, and she is endlessly grateful for the experiences and opportunities BAA has provided over the years.

Jennifer currently lives in Moorpark, CA where she enjoys soaking up every spare moment with her husband, Steve, and 2 daughters Charlie and Andi,

Neda Winter, Associate

Neda grew up in Europe, in the former Yugoslavia, and earned her Masters Degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). She graduated with a perfect score on her thesis presentation to faculty by presenting a high-end residential home, which was a project that she worked on in the offices of Kovacs and von Werz Architects in Munich, Germany.

Her first solo project was the renovation of a 650-year-old home she purchased in the old city on the island of Rab, Croatia - where she has since spent over 20 summers with her husband Kent and their daughters Anna and Leah.

Neda inherited a passion for art from her father (art teacher) and her uncle (artist in Paris). Her works include large abstract paintings and images.

Her motto in architecture and art is "create simplicity and balance, and ALL architectural and artistic styles can be beautiful."

Neda moved to Calabasas from Germany in 2007 with her family and has been with Burdge and Associates since 2012.

Kind Words about our firm:

“We have recently completed our second home with Burdge Architects and have thoroughly enjoyed our relationship. Exciting design concepts, a great staff, and excellent follow-through from concept to concrete.”
— Rodney Eckerman, client
“Doug has an uncanny ability to visualize a finished product. I have seen him time and again walk onto a lot and describe a new house in detail, or walk into a project and draw an amazing design on the wall. He sees things that normal people can’t see. If a builder follows Doug’s recipe, he can’t help looking like a hero.”
— Jerry Williams, Malibu Contractor
Creative, conscientious, imaginative, intuitive, professional, prolific responsive, responsible, persistent, pragmatic and always a pleasure through numerous projects.
— Carol Bird, Real Estate Broker, Investor
When Barry Berkus, the architect who master planned the award winning design concepts for MariSol, passed away six years ago, we faced a crisis - how to replace one of America’s most inventive residential architects who understood the Southern California lifestyle which was embodied by our beach homes and with whom we had developed a great working relationship. Doug Burdge has not only filled that void far beyond our expectation but has added exciting new concepts that have enhanced MariSol’s brand. Importantly, Doug is a great and fun guy to work with. He and all in his firm are super professional, tireless, smart and do whatever is necessary to get the work done on time. We look forward with excitement each time we embark on a new project and can’t wait for Doug’s imagination to mold something new. As much as we love all his designs, we have come to learn that Doug’s next idea is always his greatest idea.
— Rich Morris and Ron Coleman – co-developers MariSol at Malibu”
“It’s not just a Doug Burdge designed home, it’s our home. The beauty is in how Doug blended our ideas and desires with his vision. Truly collaborative and a stunning result.”
